Punjabi Cinema – What to expect on Films?

On one hand we’ve got big budget movies coming up. Huge names.. known faces and most importantly high expectations.. and on the other hand: small budget movies, not so known names + only some handfull people must’ve heard about these movies. But one thing is for sure, the fact that there are no expecations related, at times turn out to be their biggest plus point, especially when the film is above average. These ” small” movies at times turn out to be expectionally good when it comes to the plot. 2011 really has been a amazing year so far, for our punjabi cinema! Starting off with a social issue based movie like The Lion Of Punjab, later on the must awaited political thriller; Dharti, a complete diffrent genrè, from what’s been seen earlier, and then the biggest hit till now, with the amazing Gippy – Diljit duo, Jihne Mera Dil Luttiya!

In between, amazing small budget movies like Eknoor, Canadian Dream were released aswell, but unfortunately these movies weren’t for the massess, and only some few saw them, but KUDOS, everyone i know about and who saw these two movies.. just couldn’t praise enough.
But let’s not go into reviewing movies, and let’s have a look at what’s coming up! Right now, after JMDL, Yaara O Dildaara is expected to release (any time soon…). The trailers are out, the songs are out, and even the posters have been shuffling around – online for a while now. But it somehow just didn’t live up to the mark. HM is a sweet guy for sure, but the trailer.. just so predictble.. the songs.. just so cliched, where’s the spark? .. So tough competition and all they can sing about is “Happy 22 ji”? Ok, so that was YOD, but as some said; ” Let’s not judge the book by it’s cover “.

Other big movies like BM’s Hero Hitler is coming up, with Mouni Roy, where BM has tried his hands at producing (all the best wishes!!), and even some short song-promo’s are out! Amazing Amazing.. But again, I cannot tell you much about the movie, just wishing for him to change the title * fingers crossed *. Ooo, and let’s not forget about Yaar Amulle with amazing amazing amazing posters! This is the first time i’m seeing such innvoative posters! Brilliant! Other movies like Mirza- The untold story, Taur Mittra Di are also coming up with actors like Amrinder Gill, and Gippy Grewal, and Patha ni rabb kehre ranga vich raazi (too loong title) is also coming up, I wonder how they are planning on making this movie attractive in the market. Come on, Neeru isn’t such a big name yet, some few Sukhbir fans will go and watch it I guess.. But who the hell would want to watch that hindi soap-opera- serial guy.. They failed miserably casting Tarun Khanna!! The title song of this movie is hitting the spot for sure, best wishes!
So, these are some of the “attractive”- upcoming movies.. but let’s also take a look at the not-so-big movies which most probably are completed, but there are trouble selling them .. or as some people would say ” Dabba che reh ke reh gayia “. We have Raj Brar who gave a very freeesh movie like Jawani Zindabaad, which really was a very nice movie! Who’s coming up with 3 movies, two of them being Assi Punjabi and Niddar! But apart from the poster, and some cast/crew info, there is nothing we know about it, perhaps theres a trailer out there, but i do not remember. We also have Gurleen Chopra’s (Hashar fame) Desi Munde , Jasbir Jassi’s Khushiya, Sarabjit Cheema’s Welcome to Punjab, and Gulzar Inder Chahal’s I AM Singh! I just mentioned some few names here.. you can only imagen.. hor kinniya machliya hooniya talaab che.

Apart from the posters, and some snapshots of the making’s, I don’t know much about these movies, are they something to look forwad to? Will they be able to give takker to the ” big” movies? Luckily, our cinema is moving from NRI-themes + Comedies to a little more realistic cinema, a little variety in genrès.. But still, they are stuck within these singers. Only god knows when good ACTORS will come, but still, the makers are getting wise, the audience is getting wise and we want to watch good cinema, not just senseless entertainment. Punjab has a lot to give, the culture.. our rich traditions.. our colorfull themes… And I can see our punjabi cinema exploring these aspects … And making it BIG.
